The name Fresno derives from Spanish word for "ash tree." in 1856, Fresno County was created, though its present boundaries were not established until 1909. The first county seat was the foothill community of Millerton.

Here are some local attractions and landmarks that make Fresno and the Central Valley unique. Though we can't name them all, be sure to visit... Yosemite National Park, Bass Lake, the Metropolitan Museum, the Tower District, the Chaffe Zoo and more.

National Parks and Lakes

Yosemite National Park - renowned for its magnificent valley, great granite domes and peaks, waterfalls, giant sequoia, and spectacular high country, Yomemite is only 1 1/2 hours North of Clovis

Local Parks and Recreation

Wild Water Adventures - a 52-acre water amusement park located 7 miles east of Clovis

Island Water Park - Family fun year-round with over 20 water slides and rides, a huge arcade, amusement park, miniature golf (12 miles west of Clovis)

Sierra Summit Ski Resort - located 45 miles northeast of Clovis, Sierra Summit has 200 acres of skiable terrain with runs up to 2 ¼ miles long. Rental and Sports Shop and Hotel are on the premises

  Forestiere Underground Gardens - a subterranean network of over a hundred niches, courtyards, patios, rooms and passageways. Interesting to say the least.

Local Attractions

Chaffee Zoo - The Zoo is located inside Roeding Park, which is conveniently situated one block east of Highway 99 between Olive Ave. and Belmont Ave. in Fresno, California. They are open from 9 am to 4 pm.

Downing Planetarium - located on the campus of Fresno State University. The Planetarium is fun for all ages. Stop by and look around.

Fresno Ballet - Offers shows throughout the year and features some of the best entertainment in Fresno.

The Big Fresno Fair - The Big Fresno Fair runs between October 7 - 18. This is a great time for everyone. Enjoy horse racing, exhibitors, concerts, food and more.

Clovis Rodeo - The Clovis rodeo receives national attention every year. With some of the best food and bull riding money can buy, this is a fun way to spend the day.

Fresno Metropolitan Museum - The Fresno Metropolitan Museum features Art, History, and Science. This is a perfect place to take your children or explore on your own.

Fresno Philharmonic - The Fresno Philharmonic strives to present high quality, live orchestral music to audiences throughout the San Joaquin Valley.

Fresno State Sports - Fresno takes pride in their collegiate sports. Enjoy Football, Baseball, Basketball, Softball and more. Every year Fresno State is amoung the nation's best.

Madera Wine Trail - It's the Valley's Best Kept Secret - working wineries just a few minutes drive from downtown Madera and just across the river from Fresno.

Meux Home Museum -One of the prime houses in terms of historical and architectural significance is the Meux Family home at the northwest corner of Tulare and R Streets.

Aquarius Aquarium Institute - coming soon the Aquarius Aquarium Institute's mission will feature a 2 million gallon Oceanarium as its centerpiece exhibit.

Shinzen Japanese Garden - The Shinzen Japanese Garden is located within Fresno's Woodward Region Park. The entrance to the park is located on Audubon Drive, just off of Friant Road. Pack a lunch and enjoy your day at the park.

The Tower District - Full of restaurants, shops, and local hotspots, the Tower District is a great place to check out.
